Mental health disorders are cases wherein the mental health of an individual is affected. This is as much a cause of concern as a physical disorder. Having a good mental health is very essential to lead a happy fulfilling life. Therefore a mental health disorder is a deviation from the normal and can lead to considerable stress and unhappiness in life. It is important that mental health disorders are identified at an initial stage and professional help be sought,
It is important that mental health disorders be treated appropriately by an expert. However, sadly, most serious mental health disorders actually are untreated, according to research carried out by WHO . The report suggests that the developing countries are the worst off in helping people with mental disorders, but even the first world countries like North America are not very good off, with over half of their suffering population going untr eated. However, leaving mental disorders without any treatment can make them go from bad to worse and can trigger other problems in the individual. In addition, the person cannot really live life to the fullest and be as happy as he should otherwise have been. Therefore it is essential that mental disorders be treated in a timely manner. It should be understood that mental health disorders are found in people irrespective of their age. According to the research of Susan Kelley, older adults are as much at risk from mental health disorders as younger people. Another aspect that is a cause of concern is that the mental disorders are ever on the rise. This is mainly due to our unhealthy lifestyles that trigger such mental disorders. It is therefore essential to maintain a balanced and healthy mental outlook and get involved in various activities apart from just work. The rise in mental disorders h as been quite steep in the recent years. According to a research report which in Guardian , the number of children with mental disorders has soared in recent years. This also shows a lack of awareness and a lack of concern. There are a variety of mental health disorders and you could be suffering from one or more of these in varying degrees. For example, there are anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, childhood disorders, eating disorders, mood disorders, cognitive disorders, dissociative disorders, sexual disorders, suicidal behavior, personality disorders, substance related disorders, etc. In each class of mental health disorders as described above, there are a variety of types. For example, anxiety disorders cover disorders such as panic disorders, social phobia, acute stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, etc. People with anxiety disorders are filled with fear and dread of certain situations or objects or for no apparent reason at all. You have all the signs of fear, including the physical signs like sweating, rapid increase in heart rate, etc. You can identify this mental health disorder if the person’s response to certain situations and objects is not as it would normally be for others and if that person is unable to control his response. Mood disorders generally involve extremes of emotions and extreme fluctuations in emotional states of the individual. Psychotic disorders are characterized by a distorted thinking or awareness in general. These include hallucinations in which the person sees images and hears sounds that are not real and delusions, in which the person has strong false beliefs even though they are certainly false. Eating disorders involve extreme intakes of food and extreme behavior when it comes to weight and intake of food. The most common example of this class is anorexia. Personality disorders can be identified when the person has extreme personality traits which are inflexible and which are not considered socially very acceptable. The person thinks and behaves in a very different way as compared to what is expected by the society. If you think your mental health doesn’t seem normal due to whatever reason, then you should consult an expert. Your close family members and friends can help you identify your problems and troubles and be supportive during these testing times. Once you are at a specialist, you should tell him everything about your feelings and emotions and all the events that you think are related to this current state of your mind. This is very important, as only then can the psychiatrist get to know the real causes behind the mental health disorders and suggest a corrective remedy accordingly. |
